Mold Manufacturing: Precision Machining of High-Hardness Materials and Complex Cavities


In the field of mold manufacturing, carbide end mills are essential tools for machining hardened steel, pre-hardened steel, and graphite electrodes, and their applications span the entire mold manufacturing process. Modern molds typically require high hardness (HRC 45–65), complex three-dimensional contours, and high surface quality, which has directly driven the development of carbide milling cutter technology.


First, during the rough machining of large automotive body panel molds, high-toughness carbide wave-edge end mills enable deep-cut, high-feed milling, effectively removing large amounts of material while withstanding the impact of intermittent cutting thanks to their excellent chip-breaking resistance. Second, in the finishing stage, especially when machining deep cavities, narrow slots, and microstructures, long-neck ball-nose end mills made of ultra-fine-grain cemented carbide perform exceptionally well. Their high hardness and wear resistance ensure that the cutting edges remain sharp during prolonged machining, thereby guaranteeing surface accuracy; meanwhile, their high rigidity resists the “tool deflection” phenomenon caused by excessive tool overhang, directly reproducing sharp edges and fine textures.


Furthermore, for graphite electrodes required in electrical discharge machining (EDM), diamond-coated carbide end mills must be used. This combination leverages the toughness of the carbide substrate while utilizing the high wear resistance of the diamond coating to withstand the severe abrasion caused by graphite, thereby achieving high-surface-finish, burr-free electrode machining. In summary, carbide milling cutters significantly shorten mold lead times and reduce manufacturing costs by enabling direct “milling instead of grinding” of high-hardness materials.
